State golf recap

The Hartselle High girls and head coach Gary Orr, left, celebrate their third straight state championship Tuesday in Mobile. (TimesDaily photo by Gregg Dewalt)

I’m back in North Alabama, and, as I hope you already know by now, the Hartselle High girls won their third straight state championship Tuesday. (Sorry I didn’t post anything last night — I was rudely shooed away from the Magnoliva Grove clubhouse and its Internet connection).

State golf: Day 2

– posted by Cody Whitlock

It’s the second and last day of the high school state golf tournament, and we’re off to a slow start after the tourney was delayed about 90 minutes for heavy fog this morning.

The Hartselle girls lead the Class 1A-5A division by five shots, and Ardmore golfer Ashlee Beck is tied for second in the individual standings. The Athens boys, currently in fourth in Class 5A, must make up plenty of ground today.

I’ll be back later with some scores.

3:58 p.m.: The Class 5A boys scores are trickling in, and it appears Athens didn’t play its way into contention. After a 1-over 72 left him in a tie for second yesterday, the Golden Eagles’ Luke Mathias will slip a little in the individual standings after a final-round 75.

Also, I have spotted some Hartselle parents in the clubhouse, so it’s likely the Lady Tigers are making the turn or are about to.

The high school state golf tournament tees off tomorrow morning, and I’m here in Mobile to see a pair of local teams and several individual qualifiers compete for a championship.

I’ll be blogging live tomorrow, so check back often for updates. You can also follow hole-by-hole scoring at bamagolf.com.

Here’s a preivew of this year’s tournament:

Hartselle girls are state-bound

– posted by Cody Whitlock

The Hartselle High girls golf team will get a chance to defend its back-to-back state titles, as the Lady Tigers easily won Wednesday’s Class 1A-5A South sub-state tournament at Burningtree Country Club.

Hartselle posted a 245, more than 30 shots better than second-place Bayside Academy (279). Faith Academy, at 311, will also advance to next week’s state tournament in Mobile.

Heather Nail carded a 78 to lead Hartselle, which also got an 82 from Arin Eddy and an 85 from Kaylon King.

Rain washes away today’s golf

Today’s heavy rain has postponed the Class 1A-5A girls sub-state golf tournament at Burningtree Country Club until tomorrow. Teams participating include Hartselle High’s girls, the two-time defending state champions.

Decatur boys, Brewer girls crowned champs

– posted by Cody Whitlock

The Decatur High boys and Brewer girls are your 2011 Morgan County golf tournament champions. The Red Raiders successfully defended last year’s title, while the Hartselle girls — the two-time county winner — opted to play in the Athens Invitational at Canebrake.

Morgan County golf tournament

The county golf tournament got under way this morning at Point Mallard with shotgun starts at 8 a.m. Expect last year’s winners — the Decatur High boys and Hartselle girls — to defend their titles. But don’t count out Danville’s boys, who made a run at the county crown a year ago.

Should be fun. I’m headed there now. I’ll be back later to update.

On tap for this week

I’m getting over to Southern Gayles Golf Course in Athens today (hopefully it won’t be raining) to talk with Ardmore senior Ashlee Beck.

For the past two years, she’s consistently been one of the area’s best golfers. Last year, she advanced to the state tournament as an individual, and surely the expectations are higher for her final season.

A little more on Beck: Last year, she won medalist honors with a 78 at the Limestone County tournament. Also posted the lowest score (82) at sectionals and finished third at sub-state. Finished ninth individually at state. Nine-hole average of 40, with a low of 34 at Canebrake.

Check back later this week for a feature story on Ardmore’s prized golfer.

Decatur golf bests Austin, Hartselle

– posted by Cody Whitlock

I’m finally thawing out from Thursday’s golf tri-match between Decatur, Austin and Hartselle at Decatur Country Club. The temp was a little chilly – 41 degrees when the last group walked off the 18th green.

But the scores were low, too. Decatur got a 1-over 37 from Patrick Newsom and matching 38s from Mac Hennessy and Thomas Doherty to run away with a win at its home course.
