Friday night’s 16-14 semifinal win over Briarwood further proved head coach Bob Godsey and his staff are brilliant. Briarwood had an obvious size advantage along the line of scrimmage and a Division-I recruit at quarterback, but Hartselle turned in one of its finest efforts in trumping one of the state’s most successful programs.
Mentored by defensive coordinator Larry Peck, who never fails to amaze, the defense came away with four interceptions, while the offense did enough. Deacon Aldridge scored once and Gavin Marsh kicked three clutch field goals, but no style points were awarded in this one. To follow the overused cliche, it was a total team win.
