Charlston Williams caught a 29-yard touchdown pass on fourth down, Masio Stover had a 55-yard touchdown run and Dax Gillespie had a 42-yard interception return touchdown as the Tigers built a 41-0 lead in the second quarter.

Kneejerk reactions: Austin 49, Shades Valley 12

Austin moved to 5-1 with its big win over Shades Valle on Thursday night, and the Black Bears used its usual explosive running attack to get there.

But Austin’s defense has gradually improved this season, as the Black Bears intercepted three passes — returning two of them for scores – last night. They’ll need a staunch defense to match a high-powered offense in a stretch of tough Class 6A, Region 7 games. Austin travels to Gadsden City next week before hosting third-ranked Clay-Chalkville. After a Week 9 game against Pell City, the Black Bears will close out the regular season against Class 5A No. 2 Hartselle.

Austin is without a doubt a playoff team. The upcoming games will decide whether Austin gets a first-round game at Ogle or on the road.

Quick hits: Austin 49, Shades Valley 12

– posted by Cody Whitlock

Quick-hit recap: Austin improved to 5-1 in a blowout win over Shades Valley. Last year’s game took longer than six hours — largely because of an electrical malfunction — to decide a winner. This one didn’t take as long, as Austin scored four times in the first half to take command of its Class 6A, Region 7 opponent.

Statistical leaders: Seth Lynch (Austin), 137 yards and 2 TDs on 11 carries, 5 receptions for 37 more yards; Chris Sparkman (Austin) 11-f-18 for 187 yards and 1 TD, also ran for a score; Malique Elliott (Austin), six catches for 100 yards and 1 TD.

Quotable: “We just put it in the offense’s hands because we know that they are going to score when they get it. If they start off slow, we’re not going to worry about it. We’re just going to keep getting them the ball and let them do what they do.” — Austin DB Tyler Constantine, one of three Black Bears defenders who intercepted passes

I’ll sleep on the kneejerk reactions. I’ll be back in the morning. Thanks for staying up late with me.

Rivers gets face time

Yes, that was former Athens High quarterback Stephen Rivers’ mile-wide grin on ESPN. Rivers became the second Rivers QB on TV when ESPN’s cameras panned to the sideline, where he congratulated a teammate after a turnover against West Virginia on Saturday night.

Rivers wears No. 16 for LSU.
