Looking back on 2010

– posted by Cody Whitlock

I’ll have a column in Thursday’s section that reflects on the year that was in preps sports.

A few of my favorite moments from 2010 include:

  • The Decatur-Bob Jones regular season football game that decided the Class 6A, Region 8 winner. An instant classic.
  • The Hartselle-Briarwood Christian semifinal game wasn’t bad, either.
  • Covering the Hartselle girls golf team win its second straight state title.
  • Watching West Morgan’s Hayden Hamby. Against any team. Any night of the week. Ditto for Hatton’s Jordan Johnson.

Tune in tomorrow for my take on what 2010 so memorable for one local high school.

Open Mike Monday, Vacation Edition

Open Mike Monday is still on its post-Christmas break, but since I’m getting back into the swing of things tonight, expect one next week to start 2011.

Oh, and since there aren’t any prep sports headlines to report today, the Daily Double is taking one more day off for the holidays.

Be back soon. Everybody enjoy the rest of your holiday break, and get out to see some basketball this week.

Here’s hoping everyone had a Merry Christmas. Now, it’s back to headlines and videos.

Daily sports writer Mike Cummings gives us a nice preview — and a little history lesson — of the Decatur Orthopaedic Tournament. Link

Here is a story about Russellville’s Brent Calloway, who the Mobile Press-Register ranked as the top college prospect in the state. Calloway, who rushed for 175 yards in the Golden Tigers’ quarterfinal loss to Class 5A Hartselle, is also the TimesDaily’s big school player of the year.

And, from the Athens News Courier, a West Limestone duo sweep county honors in football.

Today’s video comes from one of the three PBS funnyman Red Green DVDs my dad got for Christmas.

All-state football 2010

The Alabama Sports Writers Association’s all-state football team was released today, and several local players were recognized for fantastic seasons.

R.A. Hubbard’s Nicholas Vinson and Hartselle’s Bob Godsey were named coach of the year in Class 1A and 5A, respectively.

Click here for the story and here for the complete all-state team.
